It is 2012. It's a new year and a new attitude.

THIS YEAR FEELS DIFFERENT. This year feels raw. This year feels intense. This year feels fun. This year feels like I'm going to move fast. This year feels like I'm going to go wild.

I am going to confront people. I am going to confront people who I feel aren't pulling their weight. I am going to confront people who I feel are being lazy. I am going to confront people who are trying to pull me down. I am going to confront people who tell me what to do. Basically, I'm going to be all over YOU this year.

I am going to test myself this year. I'm going to test myself mentally. I am going to test myself physically. I am going to push myself to the absolute limit in all possible ways. I'm not going to slow down. Get out of my way.

I am going to play music. I'm going to play a lot of music. I am going to play so much music that my hands bleed. I am going to finally start recording a collection of songs playing all of the instruments. I have been preparing my body and mind. It's going to happen. I was playing my Gibson SG Standard last night (at 12:45 am) before going to bed and the thought came to me, "You can do this. It can happen." The tunes are going to hopefully be heavy, dark and memorable.

I am going to become spiritual Gibraltar this year. I am going to be the person in Alma 48:17. I am going to stand up for the truth and defend everyone else's right to believe what they want. I will embody Thomas Jefferson's quote, "I swear upon the altar of God, eternal hostility to every form of tyranny over the mind of man." I am going to make the temple my second home this year.

In case you are wondering, these are NOT my goals in 2012. These are things I am going to do and be this year. My 2012 goals will be posted very soon. Stay tuned.

Today was a BIG day for me. Today I became a homeowner for the first time in my life. I am the proud owner of a two story 2752 square foot house in Placentia, California. I am the second owner. The previous owners were my neighbors James and Gloria Thomas. They bought the house on March 6, 1968 (three days after I was born). I hope this is the only house I have to buy in my life. I have finally completed one of my 2011 goals. I'm excited.

My Gibson SG Standard (채 린)

I purchased this black Gibson SG Standard on February 5, 2011. I bought it brand new. I am not a guitar player yet but I am learning. Since I already play bass I already know the notes on the fretboard. I just need to learn some chord fingerings and I'm ready to rock. The day I purchased this guitar I received a DVD copy of the Korean drama "Winter Sonata" from my friend Jesyca's mother. I devoured the drama within a month. One of the characters in the drama is a girl named CHAERIN played by the actress Park Sol Mi. I decided to name my SG after her because she is beautiful, full of personality and she has fire in her eyes. She is just like my SG! This will be the guitar I record my album (eventually) with. By the way, I took this picture of my SG yesterday. Click on the picture for a larger version.

I like this picture a lot. The guy who took it was using a Canon 5D Mark II full frame DSLR with a 24-105 L lens. He was also using a flash. I Still Have Nightmares played a little bar in Ontario, CA. At first it didn't look like it would be a good time but it ended up being really fun! We played with Kardia Mortis and BloodPenny. It was an amazing night.

I am a guitar owner. I purchased a brand new black Gibson SG Standard at Jim's House Of Music in Tustin, California on Saturday, February 5, 2011. The salesman gave me the deal of the century and I couldn't pass it up. It's gorgeous. I love it. I have not felt one ounce of buyer's remorse. I still can't believe I own the guitar of my dreams. The only thing I need to do now is learn how to play it!

2011 Goals: Sneak Peak

I'm on vacation this week. It's my last vacation week of the year. I had six weeks of vacation this year. Yeah, you should be jealous. I have been working for the Allstate Insurance Company since July 22, 1996. Next year I will celebrate my 15th year with the company. Wow. I remember my first day like it was yesterday. I was a young 28 year old guy with about $5000 (maybe less) to his name and he didn't have a clue what he was doing with his life. The former boxing champion of the world, Muhammad Ali, has been quoting as saying, "A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life." I agree with that. Next year I will be 43 years old (March 3) and I can honestly say that I don't see life the same as I did when I was 28 years old. I have learned a lot. I have learned that I have a lot more to learn and that I don't want to stop learning. Muhammad Ali has also been quoted as saying, "What keeps me going is goals." Well, I'm in that world right now and I like it. The older I get the more I want to pursue and achieve. Is that normal? I don't know the answer to that question but wanting to pursue and achieve more feels right for me. Things have felt different for me lately. I don't know what it is but things feel different...in a good way. Most decisions in my life have been based on feel. If I haven't felt good about something I haven't done it. If I have felt good something I have done it. It's that simple for me. My parents know my style so they don't bother asking me when I am going to do something (big). They know I will come around. I love them for that.

Without further adieu, here are my 2011 goals (in no particular order):

01. Record an album playing all parts (drums, bass, guitar, keyboard)

02. Buy a house in Orange County, California

03. Get married (don't laugh!)

04. Bench press 300 pounds (my max is 285 at this time)

05. Do 100 push ups in a row

06. Get down to a ripped 200 pounds

07. Take the GMAT (to eventually pursue an advanced degree)

I agree that some of these goals are pretty ambitious. I'm an ambitious guy so I'm going to go for it and see what happens. I may add some goals to this list. Some of you may be laughing at Number 03. It's time. I'm not sure how I'm going to pull off Number 03. LOL. I hope it's not too late for me!

Sixty nine years ago today on December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The picture above is of the USS Arizona where 1177 men lost their lives. I have been to the USS Arizona memorial twice (1994 and 1999) and it is a very somber place. Drops of oil, like tears from below, still rise to the surface from the entombed USS Arizona.

Lately I have been having some very interesting dreams. About a week ago I had a dream that I was camping on the beach with my two sisters. We each had individual tents. When I woke up in the morning (in the dream) I saw that my sister Finner's tent was gone. I was fearful that the ocean claimed her during the night. It was 3:00 am when I woke up. I freaked out. I had a hard time going back to sleep. It was so vivid. The next day at work I called my sister to make sure she was alive and well. My sister told me that she had been having a hard time lately and the dream must have been a prompt to call her and talk about what she was going through.

Well, I had another dream last night. It was very vivid. All I can remember is that a little blonde girl about 3-4 years old kissed me on the cheek and then she kissed my other one. I felt a lot of love for this little girl. Who is she? Is she an unborn daughter trying to reach me from the other side? Was this little girl trying to communicate with me? What was she trying to say? These were the questions I had when I woke up this morning.

This picture was taken on Friday, October 29, 2010 while at Dead X-Tras practice. This is my alter-ego who goes by "Jonny Death," "Mr. Death," or "Jonny Chick Magnet." The bass I'm holding is a 2000 Fender American Standard Jazz Bass strung with GHS B52 medium strings. In my opinion the Fender Jazz Bass is the greatest bass work horse every produced. If I had to tour the world with just one bass I would take one of my Jazz basses. The Jazz bass is that good. In case you are wondering, this is not my real hair. The camera used to take this picture is a Canon S95.

Last night my sister Janna and I saw the French band Phoenix play at The Hollywood Bowl. This is the second time we have seen them in the last 12 months. They are a great band and they didn't disappoint last night. Here is the set list from last night (not in order unless noted): Listzomania (first), Lasoo (second), Long Distance Call (third), Fences (fourth), Everything Is Everything, Love For Granted, North, If I Ever Feel Better, Love Like A Sunset Part 1, Love Like A Sunset Part 2, Rome, Girlfriend, Armistice, 1901 (last). The singer mentioned something about them going back to France to record a new album. I can't wait to hear it! Merci beaucoup Phoenix!

Dating In The Dark

Lately, I have been watching a show called "Dating In The Dark" on ABC after "Bachelor Pad" on Monday nights. The show takes three guys and three girls and puts them in a house (separated from each other of course) and has them go on invidual dates in the dark to see if there is a love connection. Over the course of one hour the viewer is able to see many one-on-one dates in the "darkroom." The entire experience is kind of cool and kind of strange at the same time. These people sit in the dark trying to get to know each other with the element of looks thrown out the window. Most of the girls say they had a "connection" just by talking with strangers in complete darkness. Obviously, the show tries to remove the looks from the equation but everyone knows it will come into play and be a huge factor as to whether or not there is a possibility of love. The culmination of the dates ends up at the "reveal" where each girl and each guy ask to see the person they are the most interested in. This is where the show really gets good. Standing mere feet from each other the two people who have picked each other are revealed in the light. The person not in the light looks on in horror, shock, joy or a combination of all three. The infrared camera captures all body language of the person doing the viewing and it's usually very revealing. After watching last year's episodes and this year's episodes I have been shocked by the fact that it appears that the girls appear to be more superficial about looks than the guys. Yeah, the girls! I would have thought it would be the other way around! Most of the girls are so disappointed when they finally see their connections revealed in the light and the guys are pretty happy most of the time. I must say that most of the girls are pretty brutal when asked about how the guys look. A 30 year old girl looking for love in this week's episode said the guy she picked and saw in the light looked "so average." The guy was a ripped magazine model. Earlier in the show she gushed about what a connection she had felt with this guy and that their date in pitch darkness was the best date of her life. Weird. If the girls on this show are a representation of normal girls I see every day then I don't have a chance. I know I'm not one of those guys who turns heads or is the life of the party. I know I'm not David Beckham, Brad Pitt or the guy on this month's GQ. I am probably below "so average" and I have accepted that. There is a powerful feeling when you accept something such as looks, or lack thereof. Do I care about looks? Yeah, I do but I don't obsess about it (well, it depends!). One thing I learned as a teenager is that if I can't hold a conversation with a girl it's not going to work out regardless of looks. "One man's trash is another man's treasure," or "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" are two accurate quotes I have heard over the years. I usually keep a picture of a pretty girl at my desk at work (usually a picture out of a magazine) to remind me of what I probably won't have in my life. You could say that I have accepted my fate. Does that kind of sound depressing? Yeah, I guess it does! I hope you have a great day!

George Steinbrenner passed away today. He was 80 years old. He was the principal owner and managing partner of the New York Yankees. All baseball fans need to see a New York Yankees game in New York because it is magnetic and a blast. I told my dad that we have to go to New York every year as part of our baseball trip. We are going back in September. I can't wait!

This is pretty sad. All that great camera gear ruined!
