Mastodon - Crack The Skye

I purchased the new Mastodon album "Crack The Skye" yesterday April 14, 2009. I have heard of these guys for years but never took the time to fully investigate their sound. I remember seeing a YouTube clip over a year ago and I don't remember being impressed. On Monday April 13, 2009, after work, I read an article in EQ magazine about their latest album "Crack The Sky" and what a step forward it represents both sonically and musically. I must admit, the article with a band interview, intrigued me. While I was at Target yesterday picking up the new Silversun Pickups album "Swoon" I decided to buy the new Mastodon - and I'm glad I did! The cover of "Crack The Skye" is very mystical and the music fits it very well. My first thoughts after listening to all seven songs was, "These guys sound like early 1970's Black Sabbath...only more advanced!" I cranked this album on the way home from Los Angeles last night and it felt like a sledgehammer to the side of my skull. This album is good, and best of all, it's ORIGINAL. Do yourself a favor and take a ride with Mastodon.
