Night Of The Belly Dancer

I took this picture of a belly dancer last night at the Eden Garden Cafe in Glendora, California. She came by my table and I had to take her picture. I also tipped her $2 (two separate times). I actually had to put the $1 bill in her costume. It was tough because as I reached to give the money she would evade my hand numerous times with her belly dance moves. It was awesome! Oh, I need to mention that after I took this picture I showed it to her on my camera's LCD screen and she said, "Oh, I love that!"

Armistice Day

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Rethondes, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month."

The date was declared a national holiday in many allied nations to commemorate those members of the armed forces who were killed during war. Called Armistice Day in many countries, it was known as National Day in Poland called Polish Independence Day. After World War II, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and to Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations. Armistice Day remains an official holiday in France. It is also an official holiday in Belgium, known also as the Day of Peace in the Flanders Fields.

Please read the moving poem In Flanders Fields written by Canadian soldier Lt. Col. John McCrae (1872-1918) during World War I. He never made it home. He was only 45 years old.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In many parts of the world people take a two minute moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. as a sign of respect for the roughly 20 million who died in the war.

November 11, 2009 is the 91th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Note: The man in the picture is Joseph Ambrose. The picture was taken in 1982. He fought for the United States in World War I (1917-1918). He is holding the flag that covered the casket of his son who was killed in the Korean War (1950-1953).
